ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - St. Charles County Council unanimously passed a resolution to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) during Monday night’s council meeting. The partnership is part of Section 287(g) of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. This partnership would train some St. Charles County officers in federal immigration training. The county will not receive monetary gain from the agreement. During the meeting, county officials reiterated that immigration searches would be at the officer’s discretion. After several county citizens spoke against the agreement, the matter passed unanimously. Members in the crowd voiced their support and refusal to the vote. While some audience members chanted “U.S.A.”, others yelled Alex Pretti’s name.On Tuesday, the city of St. Charles released a statement to clarify that they are a different governmental agency and the St. Charles City Police Department has not entered into an agreement with ICE and does not have current plans to join ICE. St. Charles City Mayor Dan Borgmeyer released a statement saying:“We are a safe community, and I remain committed to ensuring our law enforcement has the tools and resources necessary to keep it that way. The St. Charles Police Department upholds the law consistently and fairly, and individuals who break the law are held accountable, regardless of their citizenship status, race, ethnicity, or any personal characteristic.“Our officers work lawfully and appropriately with local, state, and federal partners to protect public safety. That coordination is guided by our responsibility to maintain a safe, welcoming, and thriving city.
