(CBS12) — A 19-year-old undocumented migrant from Mexico died while detained at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Florida.ICE reported that Royer Perez-Jimenez, an inmate at the Glades County Detention Center, was found unconscious in his cell early on March 16 and was pronounced dead shortly after.The report states that at around 2:34 a.m., a detention officer discovered Perez unresponsive and called for medical assistance. CPR was initiated immediately by staff, and emergency personnel arrived shortly after to take over treatment. Perez was declared deceased at 2:51 a.m. Officials said that the preliminary indication is that he may have died by suicide, but an official cause of death is still being determined.See also: DeSantis says Florida has limited power to curb gas prices as average nears $4Prior to his death, it was reported that Perez had been arrested on January 22 by the Volusia Sheriff's Office for felony fraud and resisting an officer. He had been placed in ICE custody after an immigration detainer was issued. ICE said that he was evaluated when he arrived at Glades County Detention Center on February 26, where he reportedly denied any health or behavioral issues and answered "no" to all suicide risk questions.According to the report, Perez originally entered the United States on February 19, 2022, but was encountered by U.S. Border Patrol and returned to Mexico the same day. He allegedly reentered the U.S. illegally at a later date.ICE said that the Mexican consulate has also been informed, and Perez's next of kin have been contacted.
