OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - Olathe residents and community members came together Friday after reports of ICE activity at the Olathe Unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Kansas City and at various apartment complexes in town. A Boys & Girls Club employee says several ICE agents came on the property, peered through windows, and drove past the building several times on Friday morning.The landlord of the property told KCTV 5 that agents claimed they were with the Department of the Treasury and looking for a fugitive. Olathe Police state the department was told agents were looking for someone not affiliated with the club. Word quickly spread on social media and concerned residents mobilized.“We heard they were looking into the Boys and Girls Club windows. I’m a mom, so I’m immediately like why are you messing with kids?” said Anne Parelkar, an immigration attorney running for U.S. Senate. “People are afraid right now and for good reason.”More than a dozen showed up to monitor afternoon pickup at the Boys & Girls Club off S Harrison St, including Kansas Senator Cindy Holscher, a candidate for Governor.“Children should be able to go to school, should be able to go to daycare without being worried about people looking in the windows and casing and casing the area,” said Holscher. “And they shouldn’t have to worry about their parents being taken. This is absolutely a concern. This is not what should be happening in America. This is not what should be happening in Kansas.”Nearby neighbors also made their thoughts known by putting up signs on their cars. Others, like Danica Reyes and her brother, staked out on their front porch. It’s sad to see ICE in this area, there’s a lot of ICE in this area, and it’s just heartbreaking to see people getting taken right down the street from where I live.”Reyes was referring to posts on social media saying ICE agents took at least two people into custody at an apartment complex. KCTV 5 is still working to independently verify that information. Reyes noted she was grateful for the people who showed up and stood watch today.“It really shows there is so much love in this community,” said Reyes. “It’s beautiful to see.”Copyright 2026 KCTV.
