HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - A video made its rounds on social media of a Harrisonburg mother being ‘aggressively detained’ Monday morning by federal agents while taking her daughter to school.The daughter of the detained woman shared on Facebook that her mother was asked multiple times to step outside of the car during a stop on North Valley Pike, and to present her license and registration.She said her mother has been in the United States for over 20 years, but when she asked the agents why she was being stopped, they never gave a reason.AutoplayHowever, in the video the agents ultimately arrested her. The daughter said that she was left on the side of the road for 10 minutes waiting for her family to reach her.After seeing allegations that members of the Harrisonburg Police Department were involved in this incident, WHSV reached out to HPD about the claims, who said the were not involved in any way.WHSV also reached out to the city of Harrisonburg’s Director fo Communications, Michael Parks, as well regarding the incident.He responded with the following statement:“HPD does not enforce federal immigration law, including detainers or other civil immigration enforcement, and does not have any written agreement with the federal government to engage in civil immigration enforcement. Additionally, with very limited exceptions, HPD does not ask individuals about their immigration status. However, federal law enforcement officers have jurisdiction to enforce federal immigration law in Harrisonburg as they do anywhere else in the United States. They do not have to inform us of such actions, and rarely do.Our policy does permit HPD to aid federal immigration authorities with very specific needs, such as in the case of an emergency posing an immediate danger to the public or federal agents, and for non-emergencies we can consider requests to assist with something such as traffic control or peacekeeping efforts. As far as I am aware, we have never refused such a request from a federal agency. But, again, we were not involved in this matter that you have asked about.”WHSV also made an attempt to contact the U.S Department of Homeland Security Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Harrisonburg, but never received a response as of 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.Copyright 2025 WHSV.
