IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Jorge Eliecer Gonzalez-Ochoa has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a federal charge of Fraud and Misuse of Documents. Court documents filed Wednesday say he is sentenced to the custody of the United States Bureau of Prisons for “time served plus one day.” He will not have to serve any supervised release.The other two charges from his October indictment were dropped as part of the plea deal.Gonzalez-Ochoa was arrested by ICE during his shift at the Bread Garden Market on September 25. Video of the arrest shows plainclothes ICE agents taking Gonzalez to the ground in front of customers and coworkers before loading him into a van.The indictment accused Gonzalez-Ochoa of possessing a forged Permanent Resident Card in the name of “Elijah Rodriguez.” The alien registration number on the card was not his, according to court documents.The indictment says Gonzalez-Ochoa knew the document had been forged, counterfeited, altered, and falsely made. Court documents stated that Gonzalez-Ochoa utilized Rodriguez’s personal information specifically to secure unlawful employment.Gonzalez-Ochoa and his wife came to the U.S. from Colombia in November 2024, according to Escucha Mi Voz, an immigrant advocacy group. They lived with their infant son at the Catholic Worker House in Iowa City.The arrest sparked community protests. After Gonzalez-Ochoa was released on bond, the Catholic Worker House posted on Facebook stating, “After months of detention and community pressure following his abduction at Bread Garden Market, Jorge Elieser González Ochoa is home.
