MILFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A Milford student was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the town’s superintendent of schools.“An 18-year-old Milford High School student was detained by ICE agents off campus this weekend. We have also had a number of parents who have been detained by ICE in recent weeks. We are all distraught by this news,” Superintendent Kevin McIntyre said in a statement.WBZ in Boston spoke with a friend of the student who was detained, saying they were heading to volleyball practice when they were pulled over by three undercover vehicles.“An ICE officer had stepped out of his vehicle, walked over to us and knocked on the window, and they asked him what his documentation was,” recalled the friend, who did not want to be identified.“I didn’t see him run a red light or do anything illegal. We were just on our way,” he added.The friend said he’s afraid that everything he’s built up in his life to be a good community member may now be in jeopardy.“I’ve known this to be a system that kicks out undocumented people for committing crimes, and now it’s a system that will just kick you out based on your status,” the friend said.“The Milford Public Schools play no part in immigration enforcement and support all of our students and families, including those who are immigrants to the United States,” McIntyre continued in the statement.“They are members of the community, students in our classrooms, athletes that compete representing Milford, musicians, artists, friends, and neighbors,” he added. “We will do everything in our power to support our students and families during these difficult times.”Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey released the following statement on the incident late Saturday morning:“I’m disturbed and outraged by reports that a Milford High School student was arrested by ICE on his way to volleyball practice yesterday. Yet again, local officials and law enforcement have been left in the dark with no heads up and no answers to their questions. I’m demanding that ICE provide immediate information about why he was arrested, where he is and how his due process is being protected. My heart goes out to the Milford community on what was supposed to be a celebratory graduation day.
