HAMDEN, Conn. — At least seven people were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a raid at a Hamden car wash Wednesday, according to Connecticut officials. The raid happened at 10:20 a.m. at a car wash on Dixwell Avenue, Mayor Lauren Garrett said at a press conference with town officials and community members. She noted that among those detained were a mother and father of children who are in school. The town was working to get the names of those detained and contact the families involved. Garrett described ICE's actions as "deplorable, they are disgusting, they are not what we represent in Hamden." FOX61 has reached out to ICE for comment.The conference was held hours after ICE showed up and some people that witnessed the raid described what they saw. "I ran out and what I saw was a man who had just been slammed on the ground," said Rachel Jackson, a Hamden resident. "There were at least 10 agents all around, one of them went on the side of building to catch anyone trying to flee." Jackson said she asked the man on the ground if he was okay and said that's when the situation escalated between her and an ICE agent. "An ICE agent got in my face and told me I was going to end up like them if I interfered of obstructed what they were doing," Jackson said. Community organizers at the meeting, like Kerry Ellington, called on people to united to protect those who are undocumented. "We cannot stand idlily by as we watch our undocumented neighbors get disappeared by ice and our federal government. This is not an us versus them issue, this is an all of us issue," Ellington said. Other Hamden residents who spoke to FOX61 advised that people should take the necessary steps to become legal U.S. citizens to avoid being detained by ICE. Kaye Paddyfote is a reporter at FOX61 News.
