Apple Valley woman detained by ICE over 2 weeks ago, freed after federal court orderOutside the Whipple Federal Building in Fort Snelling, where immigration court hearings are held, Maimuna Mohamud was beaming.“I am feeling blessed, thanks God, I’m doing great,” she declared.Mohamud, who asked we not show her face, is now free for the first time, following more than two weeks in the Crow Wing County Jail, after being detained by ICE agents.RELATED: Questions remain after Apple Valley mother arrested by ICE“They treat me well,” she says. “I’m thanking the judge who released me. I miss my family, my kids, my husband.”On Friday, a federal judge ruling on a petition for Habeas Corpus ordered the mother of three from Apple Valley to be released from custody.RELATED: Federal judge orders release of Apple Valley woman detained by ICEThe petition called for the government to reveal why ICE agents detained Mohamud in the first place.As of Saturday, the government has not explained why, her attorney says. “The judge ordered her release within 48 hours on the basis she was wrongfully detained,” explained Steven Thal, Mohamud’s attorney. “Absolutely good news, again, the system worked.”Mohamud’s husband, Abdulaziz Sheikh Mohamud, says on Dec. 4, a group of people driving unmarked SUVs stopped her on Highway 77, presented a warrant and detained her.“I never thought they were going to arrest her,” he says. “Even now, because she has no criminal record. She has been here 20 years.”Court documents say Mohamud was initially ordered to be removed from the U.S. in 2012 but was granted protection with ICE supervision.The papers also say she hadn’t violated any of her supervision conditions.We asked Thal about the government’s actions.“Well, they failed to provide any justification to revoke her order of supervision,” he notes. “So, she was fully law-abiding, she had a work permit, she was reporting as required whenever ICE had an appointment with her.”The court also granted Mohamud protection to prevent her deportation or continued detention at this time.“We are in America,” Sheikh Mohamud declares. “There are checks and balances, even though I don’t always agree with what ICE did to my wife and my family. At the same time, I always have hope.”Thal concedes it’s possible Mohamud could be detained again but says he’s seen no court filings or other signs indicating that would happen.“Yes, I’m afraid,” Sheikh Mohamud says. “But I think things will work out, and get her papers, and she’ll become a U.S. citizen.”KSTP has reached out to ICE numerous times for information about Mohamud’s case but has not heard back.“I am excited 100%, I am really happy to see my family,” she declares. “Thanks God, freedom is the best case in the world.” For Related Stories: ICE ICE Arrest Richard Reeve
