Alejandro Cabrera Clemente, 49, died Saturday morning while in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana. Staff at the facility found Clemente unresponsive on Saturday and began efforts attempting to save his life, the agency said in a statement Monday. Emergency medical services transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite continued medical efforts at the hospital, Clemente was declared dead later in the day. The agency did not provide any other details about the cause of death, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment inquiring after those details. How did he come to be in federal custody? Clemente, who crossed the border illegally 25 years ago, had since racked up convictions for disorderly conduct, drug possession, and violation of parole, according to ICE. Federal agents arrested Clemente earlier this year in Tennessee and transported him to the Louisiana detention center just days later.
