Local attorneys and lawmakers are raising concerns about the emotional toll immigration enforcement actions in the U.S. are taking on children, following recent cases involving families from the Portland metro area.KGW was at Portland International Airport Saturday as the Crespo-Gonzalez family returned home to Oregon. Their 7-year-old daughter from Gresham spent three weeks detained with her parents at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Texas.The case comes amid other reports of children affected by immigration enforcement.The renewed attention follows national images that surfaced last month showing 5-year-old Liam Cornejo Ramos being detained along with his father in Minneapolis.“The detention of children, especially young children, it’s nothing that can make anyone safer,” said Democratic Oregon Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, after she arrived at Portland's airport with the family.In response to KGW’s questions about the detention of the Crespo-Gonzalez family and their daughter, an ICE spokesperson sent a statement saying the Department of Homeland Security provides children with classrooms, teachers and books while in custody.“Adults who choose to bring their children with them are housed in facilities that provide for their safety, security, and medical needs,” the statement said.The parents told Dexter their daughter struggled to eat and sleep during the three weeks she was detained.A Portland immigration attorney says even when children are left with friends or relatives, the detainment of one or both of their parents is traumatizing.Attorney Rachel Game said a 5-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister from Woodburn have not seen their mother for more than six months since federal agents detained her last summer.“The kids are shutting down, they have anxiety,” said Game.Game said ICE detained their mother — her client, Marta Escalante Perez — in August while she was traveling in a van with a group of blueberry pickers in Woodburn.Game said the children's principal notified her the children were struggling at school.“I had a letter from school, that they’re both, you know, their grades, their attention is suffering in school, they’re having nightmares, they’re crying a lot,” Game said.Democratic Rep. Andrea Salinas is working to help reunite Escalante Perez with her children as she awaits approval of a U visa as a domestic abuse survivor, according to the attorney. Game said the father of Escalante Perez’s son was convicted of abusing her.Game said ICE has refused to release her client, stating she's considered a flight risk, since the mother allegedly failed to respond when they tried to contact her in 2020.
