(SBG San Antonio)SAN ANTONIO — Around 400 people from 50-plus schools across San Antonio took part Monday in a protest against immigration enforcement. The demonstration follows a series of student walkouts at several schools over the past few weeks. The event, organized by San Antonio Students for Peace in collaboration with student leaders, comes amid nationwide school walkouts against mass deportation and ICE-related violence.Students called on local leaders and law enforcement to stop cooperating with federal immigration authorities.“San Antonio has always been a city of resilience and heart. We look out for each other, we fight for each other. And today we are standing up and saying that enough is enough,” one student said.Earlier this month, the Texas Education Agency warned that participation in “inappropriate political activism” by students, teachers, or school districts could result in investigations, loss of state funding, or even state takeover of local school boards. On Feb. 4, TEA Commissioner Mike Morath appointed Levi Fuller as the agency’s first inspector general for education misconduct, a position tasked with overseeing investigations, enforcement actions, and certification sanctions.San Antonio Students for Peace criticized these measures as attempts to suppress student voices.A similar protest was held in Austin, where participants emphasized that students can engage politically on their own without disrupting the school day.
