Bruno Guedes da Silva, a father from Sewickley, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents over the weekend, leaving his family with many questions. His arrest came just two days before his 6-year-old daughter, Maria, began treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma.This is Maria's second fight against Hodgkin's lymphoma after she was first diagnosed in the spring of 2024. "Now this crisis has really been taken to another level with the removal of her father," said Hadley Haas, speaking on behalf of the family. Haas said that the family moved to the United States in 2022, fleeing a dangerous situation in Brazil. She said Guedes da Silva was pulled over by federal agents and taken into custody outside Osborne Elementary School in Sewickley over the weekend.Congressman Chris Deluzio shared a statement, seeking answers from the Trump administration, stating, "According to the family, Bruno has a valid work authorization, SSN, and license — and a little girl undergoing cancer treatment. Once again, we need answers to basic questions about why the Trump Administration is trying to remove him from the country."Addie Sochats, a parent in the district who started a GoFundMe to support the family, said, "There seems to be no reason. There seems to be no criminal background. He has all of the legal paperwork, and the family does. And what's worse is that the family was pulled over in front of the school that the little girl goes to. That's very traumatizing just to get pulled over in general by a police officer. But then your parents get taken out of the car."Haas expressed her hope for the family, saying, "I hope we can get him released and home to his family and be able to have him sit by his daughter's bedside, you know, as she goes through this terrible time. I hope his wife can have her husband with her to support her."According to the ICE website, Guedes da Silva is in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville, West Virginia.
