The president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee remains in custody at a federal immigration detention center in Indiana despite being a lawful permanent resident and having no criminal record, according to advocates and his attorney. But the Department of Homeland Security announced Sarsour's arrest last week while citing his prior conviction for throwing a Molotov cocktail at the homes of Israeli forces.Salah Salem Sarsour, a father of six who has lived in the U.S. legally for more than three decades, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on March 30. Supporters say the 53-year-old pro-Palestinian activist had been targeted by federal agents due to his political beliefs."Salah has been a lawful permanent resident in the United States for over 32 years," the Islamic Society of Milwaukee said in a statement. "He is a pillar of the American Muslim community, and a law-abiding Milwaukee business owner. Yet, he was pulled over while driving by over 10 ICE agents with no cause. He was taken out of state to a detention facility in Chicago before being transferred to a detention center in Indiana. His family was left scrambling to determine his whereabouts and his condition."...Sarsour, a Jordanian national who owns three furniture stores in Milwaukee, remains in custody Tuesday at an ICE detention facility in Brazil, Indiana, online records show. A fundraiser established by ISM officials to offset his legal costs has eclipsed $178,000."Salah is being targeted on the basis of his Palestinian and Muslim background, and his advocacy for Palestinian rights," the fundraiser reads. "We know this fight for Salah is part of a larger trend of attacks on immigrants that whittle away at democratic norms and legal protections for everyone. That is why this fight is a fight for all of us."Sarsour's background and path to the United States should be "celebrated" rather than being demonized, ISM officials insist...."Salah grew up in the Occupied West Bank in Palestine, where he faced oppression and torture at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces as a child," ISM officials said. "After marriage, he moved to the United States and built a strong and loving family. Along the way, he has supported dozens of community members, hiring countless Milwaukeeans who needed a job, and building up advocacy and educational organizations to bring greater voice to immigrants, Palestinians, and Muslims across Wisconsin and the country."The Department of Homeland Security announced Sarsour's arrest last week while citing his prior conviction for throwing a Molotov cocktail at the homes of Israeli forces."He lied on his immigration application and became a green card holder under President Clinton," DHS officials posted on X on Thursday. "This terrorist will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings."...Sarsour's deportation documents indicate that he's considered a threat to U.S. foreign policy, his attorney told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.DHS officials told the newspaper that Sarsour had been previously arrested twice by Israeli forces in the West Bank, including a conviction as a teenager. Authorities also allege he's suspected of "funding terror organizations and lying on immigration forms," but did not provide additional details, the newspaper noted.Sarsour's attorney, Munjed Ahmad, insists his client's ongoing detention is illegal as he awaits a detention hearing later this month. But a week later, we still don’t have any answers from ICE as to why. He’s been a fixture in his community for years and a leader in Milwaukee. It’s long past time for ICE to release him and stop this unjust crusade."The Council on American-Islamic Relations is also demanding that Sarsour be released from federal custody."The abduction of Mr. Sarsour, a beloved leader of Milwaukee’s Muslim community, is utterly unjust and cruel," CAIR's executive director, Nihad Awad, said in a statement. "Once again, the administration is targeting a Palestinian-American for having the courage to be a leader and to stand against injustice. We call for his immediate release and return to his family."
