Credit: Provided ALBANY PARK — Neighbors and advocates are planning a Wednesday evening protest a day after federal immigration agents arrested a man during a chaotic Albany Park scene involving a vehicle collision and weapons being aimed at bystanders. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents crashed an SUV into a woman’s car before arresting a man later identified as Domer Jesus Martinez-Sifontes following a chase in Albany Park around 8 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Lawrence and Kedzie avenues, according to police, federal authorities and eyewitnesses.“We should not have to live like this and be afraid. And we need to be protecting our neighbors,” said an eyewitness who asked for their name to be withheld out of fear of reprisal from federal authorities. “I don’t want to be on high alert when I take my dog out for a walk and stuff. I don’t want to live like that.” The Chicago branch of the Party for Socialism & Liberation is leading a 7 p.m. Wednesday protest that will start at the corner of Montrose and California avenues in Horner Park. Tuesday’s arrest felt like déjà vu for neighbors that endured last year’s Operation Midway Blitz, the campaign that saw thousands of immigration arrests and clashes with neighbors, said Kathryn Stender, an organizer with the group. “We saw the horrifying footage, seeing ICE crash their car into a bystander’s vehicle,” Stender said. “Chasing community members and threatening community members who were there to record and protect their own neighbors with Tasers and things like that.” A screen capture from a June 2, 2026 video of a shirtless man being arrested by federal immigration agents in Albany Park. Eyewitness told Block Club they saw a shirtless man running down an alley with a “terrible look of fear” before an SUV driven by a federal agent slammed into the rear of a woman’s car as it was stopped near the traffic light at Kedzie Avenue. Multiple agents exited the SUV to arrest Martinez-Sifontes, according to the eyewitness. The Department of Homeland Security identified Martinez-Sifontes as an immigrant from Venezuela accused of being in the county illegally since 2023. Martinez-Sifontes will remain in custody until he’s deported, a spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “As officers attempted to put handcuffs on Martinez-Sifontes, he assaulted officers and attempted to evade arrest by fleeing on foot. Once officers caught him, he continued to resist arrest and failed to comply with officers’ lawful commands,” the spokesperson said. The Chicago Police Department confirmed that a man driving an SUV was headed west on Lawrence when he hit the rear left side of a stationary car in traffic driven by a 59-year-old woman around 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 3100 block of West Lawrence Avenue. The SUV then fled the scene by the time police arrived. The 59-year-old woman was not seriously injured, police said. Police did not confirm if the SUV’s driver was a federal agent because the vehicle had left the scene by the time officers responded. The collision remains an open investigation, police said. As federal agents wrestled Martinez-Sifontes to the ground, a crowd of about 12 people, including a Sun-Times reporter, gathered at the scene. Many of the bystanders were blowing whistles and filming the federal agents, the eyewitness said. As they were subduing a shirtless Martinez-Sifontes, federal agents demanded the woman driving the blue car that was hit by their SUV move her vehicle, according to the eyewitness. She was threatened with arrest because agents had lost a loaded magazine clip under the car. But the crowd warned the woman in the blue car that Martinez-Sifontes’ limbs were at risk of being run over if she moved, the eyewitness said. “They used a lot of violence on him [Martinez-Sifontes]. And he was strong. He fought. He fought very hard,” the eyewitness said. Federal immigration agents being driven in five vehicles headed to the intersection of Lawrence and Kedzie avenues Tuesday morning while agents on the scene tried to arrest Martinez-Sifontes. Agents also tased Martinez-Sifontes, according to video of the arrest.As the crowd gathered around the scene, one agent yelled, “Back the f— up,” while pointing what appears to be a taser at the group of neighbors and at least one journalist documenting the arrest, according to the Sun-Times. After Martinez-Sifontes was arrested, one of the federal agents asked the driver whose car agents struck to move her vehicle so he could collect the dropped loaded magazine clip. The agent also asked her if she had intentionally placed it under her car, the eyewitness said. The woman, who had not exited the car during the encounter, didn’t know what a “magazine” was until the agent pulled another one off his vest to show her. She then moved her car a few inches forward so the agent could collect the loaded magazine clip from the ground, the eyewitness said. “We shouldn’t have to live like this. This is not a third world country,” the eyewitness said. Federal agents said they fled the scene Tuesday after an “agitator spray painted one of the officers’ vehicles” leading to the “agitator’s” car hitting a light pole while fleeing the scene, a Homeland Security spokesperson said in an email. But Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33rd) — who was patrolling the ward Tuesday after she’s gotten reports of federal immigration agent activity — said “there is no evidence of that in what I have seen.”“All of the videos and pictures just show agents going after this man and impacting the woman’s car,” Rodriguez-Sanchez said. She’s also skeptical of the reason federal authorities gave for arresting Martinez-Sifontes, she said. “Now, what evidence do they have of people being here illegally? I don’t know. We don’t believe most of what they say because I have seen them lie so many times,” Rodriguez-Sanchez said. Post navigation
