(SBG San Antonio)SAN ANTONIO - As activity by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ramps up across the country, students are walking out of class in protest.Around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, students walked out of class at Roosevelt High School, joining students at multiple other San Antonio-area schools who have held similar protests in the past two weeks.Students report that school and district officials told protestors that if they left campus during the walk-out, they would not be able to return for the remainder day. In a message sent to parents and guardians, school administrators said they were aware of plans for a student-led protest or walkout. The statement said the school respects students’ rights to express their views, but that student safety and maintaining the learning environment are priorities.The school said students who participate in a walkout would be considered truant and receive an unexcused absence. Administrators also warned that students who leave campus and later return may be subject to search and disciplinary action. The statement added that disciplinary consequences could include detention, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, or a recommendation for an alternative educational setting if the event causes significant disruption.The school encouraged families to speak with students about safety concerns, noting that once students leave campus, staff are unable to supervise them.
