Emmanuel Damas, a Haitian man attempting to seek asylum in the United States, died this week after spending months in detention, his brother told AZPM. Damas was detained at the Florence Correctional Facility, where he developed a toothache that worsened over time — landing him in the ICU, said Presly Nelson. On Monday, Nelson said, his brother died. “A toothache,” Nelson said. “A toothache. All you needed is a few antibiotics.” Speaking days after his brother’s death, Nelson described Damas as a compassionate, quiet man who loved family, parties, and Haitian music. Damas’s family was not permitted to visit him, Nelson said, until his final days in the ICU. “I believe in this country. I believe in the compassion and the good heart of American people. This country has done a lot of (good) to a lot of people, and I can’t imagine why some people can be so heartless,” Nelson said. Reached Wednesday, an ICE spokesperson did not comment on Damas’s death, but said a news release was forthcoming. As of 4:30 pm Wednesday, ICE’s media page had not published a release on Damas. Nelson, along with U.S. Rep Adelita Grijalva and Chandler Councilmember Christine Ellis, are calling for an investigation into Damas’s death. Ellis, who is Haitian American, said she learned of Damas’s illness and death from a local, Haitian-run radio station in The Valley. “I was flabbergasted … to think that someone can die this quickly because of a lack of care within a detention center, right here in the State of Arizona,” said Ellis, who is also a registered nurse. Reached Wednesday, Grijalva called the situation “tragic and avoidable,” reiterating calls for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign. “I can’t wrap my head around how horrible his life was at the end,” Grijalva told AZPM. Deaths have increased in immigration detention facilities. A Guardian investigation found that 32 people died in ICE custody last year alone, marking the deadliest year in more than two decades.
