YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — Earlier this month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained a Yuma barber while at work and now, with his wife just three weeks away from giving birth, his family is fighting for his release.Twenty-four-year-old barber Maikol Carreno was in the middle of a haircut when ICE agents stormed through the door at Stay Faded Barbershop in Yuma. A security video inside the shop shows the moments they take him into custody.Carreno’s wife, Neyllin McCowan, a U.S. citizen, said it took days to locate and speak to him before he was ultimately transferred to the Eloy Detention Center.“It makes me mad. I don’t agree with what they are doing. Because what they are basically doing is just kidnapping people,” McCowan said.Carreno, a Venezuelan national, came to the United States seeking asylum, but his case has been stuck in a lengthy process. The couple has been married since March, and McCowan says his arrest could not have come at a worse time as she prepares to deliver their first child in the coming weeks.“Honestly, I do not want to cry, but he was the household provider, so it is hard,” she said.Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security ended temporary protected status for Venezuelans, a decision a federal judge later blocked. The order remains tied up in litigation, leaving many Venezuelan nationals in the United States facing uncertain status.Despite the uncertainty, McCowan says she is staying hopeful. In the meantime, the Yuma community has rallied around the family, donating money for legal fees through a GoFundMe fundraiser. The owner of Stay Faded Barbershop told Arizona’s Family that Carreno’s barber chair and his clients will be waiting for him when he returns home.See a spelling or grammatical error in our story?
