CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) — A Charlotte man says federal immigration agents detained his partner during an early morning traffic stop on Wednesday along Independence Boulevard, an encounter he captured on video.The stop occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, Luis Duque was a passenger in the vehicle when agents approached. Duque said the two men initially believed the blue lights were from Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and pulled over.‘They asked for identification’In video recorded by Duque, an agent can be heard telling the occupants the vehicle matched the description of one they were looking for.“See some identification, please — we are looking for somebody who has this same vehicle so I must see some identification from you guys,” the agent said in the video.Duque said agents then asked for his partner’s legal status.“My partner and I were nervous”, Duque said. “And they asked for identification and had to obtain him for his legal status.”Partner brought to U.S. as a childDuque said his partner has lived in Charlotte since he was 2 years old, having come from Mexico. Video shows the partner being taken away. Duque can be heard in the footage asking to say goodbye.“Can I please say goodbye to him, don’t know when I will see him,” Duque said.Duque said his partner does not have a criminal record and is not a criminal. He said he fears his partner will be deported to Mexico.“I’m trying to stay positive, that’s what they tell me, but it’s tough,” Duque said.Duque said his next step is finding legal representation.“Trying to get a lawyer that can help and get answers,” he said.City council member respondsCharlotte City Council member Juan Arias said he has received calls about additional ICE sightings in the city on Wednesday.
