Across Arizona on April 25, you could see some large crowds gathering for what’s being called a "National Day of Action.Groups will be in areas like Surprise, Flagstaff, and Mesa to protest ICE detention centers.One location where protesters are expected to rally is near 8th Avenue and Alma School Road in Mesa. Organizers say they expect a large turnout in the area, adding they’re calling for "communities not cages."Many Arizonans say they don’t want ICE to build a detention center in Surprise. It’s part of the reason activists are protesting.According to Surprise city leaders, the warehouse site is expected to open this fall with 542 beds, taking in 250 undocumented immigrants each week, and it will have the capacity to expand to hold 1,500 people.Frustration over those plans is growing as new Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said he wants to keep the agency out of the “lead story” every day and keep things low-profile.According to an NBC News report, Mullin is taking steps to rein in concerning immigration enforcement practices. The outlet said he's also reviewing plans that would expand detention center capacity.It's also being reported that ICE officers have been instructed not to enter homes without a judicial warrant and reduce the number of arrests made at immigration court hearings.Protesters say they want the Trump administration to stop attacking the due process rights of immigrants and all Americans.The protest starts in Mesa near 8th Avenue and Alma School Road around 9 a.m. Organizers are encouraging people to keep things peaceful.>> Download the 12News app for the latest local breaking news straight to your phone.
