Scott Cousineau, the senior minister at First Parish Congregational Church in Saco, says last Friday a member of the church, Makengo Nzeza, talked with him about how the church could support him and his family of six.Also read: Gov. Mills sees ICE as 'dangerous moment in our history'His wife had just given birth days earlier via C-section and was recovering from surgery.The reverend says after their conversation Nzeza went to pick up some things for his family and on his way home ICE took him.First Parish Congregational Church in Saco (WGME)The reverend says Nzeza and his wife had applied for and were granted asylum and were doing everything right.“"I'm heartbroken for him, for his wife, his kids. I'm also, I'm furious that this guy, this man, this good man was taken into custody and I'm sure that he's not staying in the Ritz Carlton or something like that. I'm sure that he's staying in very terrible conditions. But it just makes me angry because here's someone who was doing everything right. Not someone who was trying to evade the law or break the law. He was working, taking care of his family. He was a member of the Rotary Club. He's a member of the church. He's active, involved in church, and yet he was scooped up and is in custody,” Cousineau said.The Department of Homeland Security said they are working to arrest 1,400 people in Maine who they say are here illegally while continuing to claim they're "the worst of the worst." DHS has labeled this effort "Operation Catch of the Day."CBS13 asked the DHS several questions, including what the charges are against Nzeza, if he's considered the "worst of the worst,” where he is and whether ICE knew he had a newborn.Also read: Report: Single mother of 4 in ICE custodyOn Wednesday, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin released a statement, saying in part: "On January 23, ICE arrested Mackengo (sic) Nzeza, an illegal alien from Angola. On December 5, 2017, he entered the U.S. on a tourist visa that required him to leave the U.S. by June 4, 2018. All of his claims will be heard before an immigration judge. This Administration is not going to ignore the rule of law."A GoFundMe page has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Nzeza and his family.CBS13 asked DHS again for a complete list of all people detained in Maine and what they're charged with. DHS has not provided that information.
