Santiago Benitez is in the Pickens County Jail, awaiting transfer to a Louisiana immigration detention center.On Tuesday, this family was looking forward to birthday celebrations and baseball games. And now they're looking for answers about when they'll be together again.The father who usually wears these boots is not home with his wife and five children. Benitez is a husband and a provider for his family. He was working to become a legal U.S. citizen."When we first got together, it never crossed our mind that it would be this hard for him to become documented. We would have never done that to our children or ourselves," said his wife Katelyn Coe.Coe is in survival mode. Since Tuesday's immigration interview in Montgomery, and the following arrest of her husband by ICE agents, she feels lost. And so do her children."My four-year-old, he's old enough to understand kind of what's going on. But he's not very affected by it. And my nine-year-old, he took it the worst. He cried for over an hour, started throwing up, and I ended up having to take him to the emergency room," said Coe.Family and friends are stepping up and showing support with meal trains, a Go Fund Me and other donations.Katelyn's father is standing by his daughter's side through the pain."What's the best way to describe? It is like there's been a death in the family. That's that's all I can come up with," said Price Coe.He said if this makes his daughter and grandchildren move to Mexico, his retirement plans will change.He hoped the thousands of dollars and years spent toward securing citizenship would work."It rips my heart out. It's ripped everybody's heart out, because we know. You know, we know each other. And we love him. We love him very much," said Price Coe.Katelyn said Santiago works six days a week, he's a good man, employee and loves his children.He was working while Katelyn was on maternity leave, but that too has changed."He's not a criminal. He's not a rapist. He's not a national security threat. He's a hard working man," said Katelyn Coe.Katelyn and Santiago have been together since 2014 and married since 2023.They have spent the last two years fighting for his legal citizenship.Agents told them his arrest resulted from his 2013 re-entry into the country.They're holding out hope his situation will get resolved at a hearing before he has to leave the country.-ls- A Moundville family is suffering after their father was detained by ICE agents.
