ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs is expressing concerns about increased ICE activity in the Capital Region, especially after an Ecuadoran family was detained -- and separated -- in the city last week.According to the Times Union, Kevin Ushiña, his wife, Veronica Saquillo, and their two children, ages 5 and 9, were apprehended on Aug. 10. The TU reported the family had been living in Albany for two years, but had withdrawn from the asylum process last year due to fears that one or more of the parents would be detained at a check-in. Detentions at asylum check-ins have happened at the Malta field office, as well as across the country.Mayor Applyrs said, in a statement on social media: I am deeply unsettled to hear reports of increased ICE activity throughout the Capital Region, including a family of four that was recently detained in Albany. No parent or child should have to experience the trauma of being separated as a family. My heart is with this young family and all members of our community whose lives have been disrupted by ICE.MORE: Schenectady man detained by ICE returns home, faces ongoing immigration proceedingsICE’s actions continue to stoke fear and uncertainty for immigrant communities across our country. As a diverse city that values compassion and humanity for all residents, the reports of increased ICE arrests are deeply disturbing.I met with a number of local advocacy coalitions to hear the concerns and increasing needs of Albany community members who have been impacted. I am deeply grateful for the support these organizations provide for the families affected, ensuring our neighbors have access to critical resources in their time of need. My Administration is committed to being a partner in this important work to support our families. As Mayor, my priority remains the safety and wellbeing of every member in our community.According to the Times Union, the children and their mother are being held in a Texas detention center, while the father is being held in western New York.
