EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — On Wednesday morning, July 15, President Donald Trump said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents should continue traffic stops, calling the tactic one of the agency’s “most important and effective” tools.Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said people illegally in the country would be “arrested and deported wherever they are.” He did not say whether ICE agents would be allowed to make traffic stops after two deadly shootings. Trump says ICE can’t give up traffic stops: ‘Important and effective’ On the same day, a woman’s encounter with law enforcement officers at an Allsup’s Convenience Store in Chaparral, New Mexico raised concerns.In a video uploaded to social media, two officers who appear to be ICE agents are seen speaking to the woman. According to the social media post, witnesses say the woman walked into the store and asked for help, saying she was being followed.A woman claiming to be her daughter commented on the post, saying that her mother is in the U.S. legally and has been for over 35 years.According to the alleged daughter, the mother was detained on her way to a chemotherapy appointment. “I’m so sorry your mom and your family is having to go through this and I pray that she is released and can receive her treatment,” Instagram user, itsyagirlgenep, wrote.This comes after ICE directed its agents on Tuesday, July 14, to temporarily pause traffic stops nationwide in the wake of two deadly shootings. ICE plans to temporarily limit traffic stops following fatal shootings: reports In Houston, agents shot and killed Lorenzo Sagrado Araujo. While ICE said that Araujo had weaponized his vehicle, other men in the van said the accusation was false and noted that agents in the unmarked vehicle trailed them before surrounding the vehicle.On Monday, agents shot and killed Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine. In a statement, ICE said Guerrero fled the scene and argued his doing, resulting in a “public safety threat” that prompted officers to shoot.KTSM 9 News reached out to the Department of Homeland Security to confirm whether this encounter was part of an ICE enforcement operation and to clarify the agency’s current guidance on vehicle stops.
