Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Federal agents showed up at a Rochester man's home last week, months after he emailed the head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement condemning immigration enforcement efforts in Minneapolis following the killing of Alex Pretti, according to his attorney.David Streever, a father of two and former journalist, was on a trip to Finland with one of his children when his wife answered the door to their home and was handed an unsigned warning from ICE, attorney Adam Steinbaugh said."Agents showed up at his home and they gave his wife a form essentially accusing him of engaging in some kind of threat by sending an email to the director of ICE," Steinbaugh said.Steinbaugh explained that Streever sent an email to Todd Lyons, then the acting ICE director, after Pretti was fatally shot by federal agents."David's email is a plea," Steinbaugh said. "It is appealing to the conscience of the director of ICE. It is essentially saying, 'Think about how you're going to feel later on in your life,' and (there's) nothing threatening about that."BACKGROUND: Minnesota sues Trump admin for evidence in shootings, including Alex Pretti & Renee Good | FBI blocks Minnesota officials from accessing Alex Pretti case files, BCA saysIn a report from Syracuse.com, Streever shared the email he sent to ICE.You are a monstrous human being and will go down in history as America’s Reinhard Heydrich, the butcher. The way you are protecting the obvious execution in Minnesota, even as we see the videos, will lead to your downfall. Even Trump will turn on you before the end, and you will be a sad, despised man who eats himself alive with shame at your own pathetic weakness. You will never know peace. You will seek to lose yourself, to escape the burden of knowing the truth about yourself. But wherever you go, you will find yourself. You will torment yourself until your last day on Earth. In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said, "ICE investigates all credible threats towards its employees and officers, including threats to the ICE Director.""They're saying there's an ongoing investigation into an email, one email sent six months ago," Steinbaugh said. "There's nothing to investigate here."After the letter was delivered, Steinbaugh said, agents appeared at the front desk of the hotel where Streever was staying in New York City after arriving back in the U.S. from Finland."I think that anyone who gets federal agents showing up to their door and to their hotel, especially in a manner where it suggests that the government is tracking you, I think anyone who has that happen to them would be alarmed," Steinbaugh said.He called the actions by ICE a violation of First Amendment rights."That's government action that is sufficient to chill someone's speech," Steinbaugh said. "It is sufficient to and intended to make someone say, 'It'd be better if I didn't talk.'"Steinbaugh said he's "still evaluating the situation" and is unsure what's next. He said he has not filed anything in court. Streever was not available for comment.
