A Massachusetts woman suffering from a deadly miscarriage related infection was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after her frantic fiancé called 911 to get her help during a mental health crisis. Iara do Carmo Santana, 29, was arrested on September 4 after her partner Gabriel Lemos called emergency services with 'concerns for her well-being,' her attorney said at her arraignment, the Boston Globe reported. Do Carmo Santana was struggling with depression following a miscarriage in August which required her to undergo surgery and resulted in an infection. On the day of her arrest, do Carmo Santana was distressed and her fiancé called emergency services for help after the two got into an argument. When police arrived at their Malden home, a city outside of Boston, she was arrested on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a household member, court records viewed by the Boston Globe stated. Prosecutors alleged that she pushed her fiancé and struck him with a hair straightener. She was detained at a police station and released, but ICE was alerted to her arrest and she was apprehended by federal agents. Do Carmo Santana told the Boston Globe that she was not given proper medical care, did not have access to her medication and was hungry after being placed in a Burlington detention center. She said she was denied her medication while in the detention center 'I was afraid that I was going to go crazy in there. I was really scared,' she recalled. After a few days in the center, a federal district judge released do Carmo Santana, citing concerns for her health. 'If you take someone into custody, as they do, that’s fine. But you owe them medical care. I view that as a serious issue,' District Judge Leo T Sorokin said in court. The detention center has previously come under fire for alleged abhorrent conditions. WBUR reported last year that dozens of people described the center as 'abysmal' and 'unsanitary.' Immigration lawyers said their clients lacked access to showers and sinks, were sleeping on concrete floors and were not given medical care. ICE denied the allegations, saying in a statement: 'Any claims of inadequate conditions at the ICE Burlington facility are categorically FALSE.'No lawbreakers in the history of human civilization have been treated better than illegal aliens in the United States.'Do Carmo Santana said she told agents she just had surgery and was feeling pain in her abdomen, but was still denied medical attention. Lemos launched a GoFundMe while his fiancée was in the facility, writing in the description that she went into crisis, and he called 911 only a week after she lost her pregnancy. Do Carmo Santana said she was 'afraid that I was going to go crazy in there,' adding that she was 'really scared' in the detention center ICE denied allegations that the Massachusetts field office had poor living conditions. Protesters are pictured outside the center in October after allegations of mistreatment came to light He explained that the family only wanted her to be taken to the hospital, but instead she was arrested and held for six hours. Lemos added that when she was released from police custody, ICE was already at the door waiting for her. 'Now Iara is locked up, hungry, cold, and living with a fear I had never seen in her. On the other side of all this, her 6-year-old son is without his mother and keeps asking why she isn’t coming home. I don’t have an answer that hurts less,' he wrote. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told the Boston Globe that do Carmo Santana immigrated from Brazil in 2021 and was arrested after unlawfully crossing the border. She then applied for asylum and received employment authorization to work as a house cleaner in the US. Lemos is a lawful permanent resident and do Carmo Santana is applying for a green card. Her immigration court date is scheduled for 2029. The Massachusetts Deportation Defense is raising money for her legal team. The group said her lawyer, Todd Pomerleau, 'dropped everything Labor Day Weekend' to sue ICE in Boston Federal Court. The Daily Mail has reached out to Lemos, ICE and do Carmo Santana for comment and additional information.
