U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says a father and daughter detained in Albany on Friday are being processed for removal to Venezuela. An ICE spokesperson said Monday that agents from the Buffalo office had a warrant of removal when they took Alexander Jose Regnault-Avila and his child into custody in Albany. The spokesperson said the family entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and an immigration judge ordered the family removed in 2024. Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs criticized the detainment over the weekend and said that the girl involved was 4 years old. She said that city police do not coordinate or communicate with ICE, and accused the agency of "creating fear in our diverse city." "I was disturbed to learn that an Albany resident and his four-year-old daughter were detained by ICE Friday morning. No family, and no child, should have to experience this kind of fear and trauma in our community. ICE's actions create fear in our diverse city. All families in our community deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and every child deserves to feel safe. Albany is a city that values compassion and humanity. As part of this work, the Albany Police Department does not coordinate or communicate with ICE regarding individuals in our community. My thoughts are with this family as they navigate this difficult moment." ICE did not directly comment on the mayor's remarks in its response to Spectrum News 1.
