EAGLE PASS, Texas — A man died after attempting to evade Border Patrol agents by swimming across a canal near Eagle Pass, Texas, according to a press release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The incident occurred on June 14, 2024, when agents were alerted to a group of possible undocumented noncitizens.At approximately 5:30 a.m., Border Patrol personnel monitoring remote cameras notified agents of the group located about 3.15 miles east of the Rio Grande River and 17.5 miles northwest of the Eagle Pass Bridge Port of Entry. Agents arrived at the scene around 6:00 a.m. and apprehended four individuals determined to be undocumented noncitizens. Two others attempted to escape by entering a nearby canal, which was approximately 60 feet wide.As agents approached, one individual successfully crossed the canal and absconded, while the second began to struggle halfway across. Despite agents urging him to swim back, they lost sight of him as he was carried downstream by the current. Assistance was requested from the Eagle Pass Fire Department at 7:53 a.m., but after a three-hour search, the man was not found.The following day, the Maverick County Sheriff's Office informed Border Patrol that a body had been recovered 4.7 miles downstream from where the man was last seen. An adult male citizen of Guatemala, who had been part of the group, surrendered to deputies near the scene and was taken into custody by agents.The Guatemalan man confirmed he was present during the incident and identified the decedent as the group's guide. He stated that the guide had alerted them to the arrival of immigration officers and instructed them to run. The man's description of the guide matched the body recovered from the canal, but CBP was unable to identify the decedent.The Webb County Medical Examiner received the decedent, and no autopsy was deemed necessary due to the apparent circumstances of death. The CBP Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the incident, and the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General has been notified.
