Editor’s note: The video above is previous coverage from May 18, 2026.AUSTIN (KXAN) – An Austin high school senior who was detained weeks before graduation walked the stage with his classmates Tuesday.Luis Fernando Cabrera, 18, a student at Northeast Early College High School, completed his coursework while in federal custody and remained on track to graduate, according to officials and community advocates.The graduation comes after weeks of uncertainty following his May 1 arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Cabrera was detained after a traffic stop on Interstate 35 and held at the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center.Cabrera, a varsity soccer player, had his team rally for his release and his coach speak on his situation.“Luis is a sweet, caring young man,” Northeast ECHS Coach Kyle Olson told KXAN. “It’s unfortunate timing for all of it.”Cabrera’s family immigrated to the United States in July 2019, seeking asylum, when he was 11, according to his attorney.
