Feb. 12, 2026Updated Feb. 13, 2026, 10:50 a.m. ETA Milford High School student who made national headlines after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents last spring will attend the State of the Union address as a guest of U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass.Moulton, who represents the 6th Congressional District, has invited Marcelo Gomes da Silva to be his guest at President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Feb. 24.“I invited Marcelo to join me at the State of the Union because his story captures what’s broken in our immigration system right now,” Moulton said in a prepared statement. “The outpouring of support that Marcelo received following his detainment wasn’t an accident. It happened because people know the kind of person that Marcelo is. He is exactly the kind of young person America should be investing in, not locking up. If we want to call ourselves a nation of opportunity, we should start by uplifting young people like Marcelo.”Gomes da Silva, now a senior at Milford High, described the invitation as "deeply meaningful."“As an immigrant, being invited to the State of the Union is deeply meaningful,” he said in a statement provided by Moulton's office. “I’m proud to represent the strength, faith and hard work of my community. Thank you to Seth for this invite.”ICE agents arrested Gomes da Silva on May 31 after pulling him over while he was driving his father’s car to volleyball practice. The teen's student visa had expired in 2015, although he was unaware of it.Gomes da Silva spent six days in custody at the ICE field office in Burlington, where he said he was denied access to a shower or a bed. He was released on $2,000 bond.Moulton, 47, is serving his sixth two-year term in Congress. He is a Marine Corps combat veteran, serving four tours in Iraq.Moulton announced in October that he would challenge U.S. Sen.
