ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Authorities captured an inmate who escaped from the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Rockdale County on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.Sheriff Eric Levett posted a video message on the agency’s Facebook page Monday afternoon to explain the heavy law enforcement presence in the area of Chambers Drive and Sigman Road, less than half a mile from the Rockdale County Jail in unincorporated Conyers.Levett said the Conyers Police Department arrested the inmate Saturday for a traffic violation. He was booked into the jail, where ICE placed a hold on him.An ICE agent arrived Monday to pick him up. As he was driving the inmate away from the jail, the man jumped out of the vehicle near the intersection of Chambers Drive and Sigman Road and escaped, Levett said.ICE contacted the sheriff’s office for assistance. Deputies, along with ICE, Conyers police and the Georgia State Patrol, set up a perimeter in the area and caught the man shortly after 3 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.Levett emphasized that the increased law enforcement presence in the area was to capture the inmate, and was not part of an ongoing ICE operation.The inmate’s identity has not been released.This is a developing story.
