PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Department of Homeland Security has not released many details or answered questions after an ICE officer shot a man on a Valley freeway this week.A retired ICE officer, who wants to remain anonymous, said he knows the ICE officer who fired his weapon.“It’s very foolish to try and flee a traffic stop it’s just really dangerous,” he said. “They’re a good officer, solid officer. No issues at all.”ICE officers pulled over Jose Garcia-Sorto on the I-17 near Dove Valley Road around 4 a.m. Wednesday. He initially stopped, but then is accused of speeding away toward an ICE officer.Department of Homeland Security officials said that ICE officer shot Garcia-Sorto’s SUV twice because he feared for his life.“His actions seem like they were in line with the use of force policy. His life sounds like it was in danger. I mean a car can run you over and kill you, obviously,” said the former ICE officer.Garcia-Sorto’s family said he was shot, but ICE has not confirmed he was hit by a bullet. Officially, we’re told Garcia-Sorto was hurt and taken to the hospital in stable condition.Federal policy requires all ICE personnel to wear body cameras, but we don’t know if that guideline was followed during this altercation.“I think every law enforcement officer should have one on. I think it provides the public the transparency that they need and deserve and I think it provides the offices, you know, protection,” said the former ICE officer.He said the agency conducts surveillance on illegal immigrants before initiating traffic stops. Garcia-Sorto’s family confirms he is from Honduras and in the country illegally, but we don’t know if something specific put him on ICE’s radar.Garcia-Sorto’s wife said her husband is a construction worker who was heading into work at the time of the shooting and since then, she hasn’t been able to visit him in the hospital.The FBI is leading the investigation on the officer-involved shooting and will determine if the ICE officer’s actions were justified.See a spelling or grammatical error in our story?
