WASHINGTON (7News) — Concerns are mounting from District leaders over increased immigration enforcement in D.C. and the Metropolitan Police Department's cooperation with immigration enforcement agencies.The council wrote to Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll Monday evening, requesting clarity on the extent of coordination between MPD and federal law enforcement since the federal law enforcement surge began in August - repeating requests made by the council last month. Among other things, the council requested weekly breakdowns of joint patrols from mid-August to mid-December.Carroll stated in his Jan. 10 response letter that MPD is not working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but that "many of the federal agencies MPD is working with during this period of enhanced federal partnership, and with which MPD has long-established relationships, now have authority to conduct civil immigration enforcement.""When MPD officers go out with these agencies, our goal is to address crime and community concerns, not to enforce civil immigration. However, federal agents can and do exercise their own enforcement authority," the letter continued.Meanwhile, Councilmember Brianne Nadeau (D - Ward 1) is calling for two executive orders that pave the way for local police cooperation with immigration enforcement to be rescinded. Mayor’s Order 2025-090, which established an emergency operations task force to manage the District’s response to the president’s crime emergency and to his Safe and Beautiful Task Force, and MPD EO-25-005, which allows MPD to share information about people not in their custody – such as during traffic stops - to immigration enforcement agencies."We now have not only people who don't trust MPD because they're worried they'll be profiled or don't trust MPD because they are immigrants, we also have people who always believed they could trust MPD who now won't make that call because they're afraid their call will harm someone else," Nadeau told 7News last week, when she released her committee's report looking into immigration enforcement concerns brought up by residents.When 7News asked for Carroll and Mayor Muriel Bowser’s response to Nadeau’s requests during an unrelated press conference on Thursday, Bowser spoke for both of them, saying they had no comment.Carroll said Thursday he’s still evaluating whether to rescind MPD EO-25-005. “We'll continue to evaluate the policies and see what the best path is forward,” he said.MPD had no additional updates when 7News followed up on Tuesday."ICE is patrolling American cities. If we don't want that, the Congress has to stop funding ICE because thousands of agents who are untrained to police in urban environments are on our streets. That's where the questions should be placed," Bowser told reporters Thursday.7News reached out to ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, asking how many immigration arrests they have made in D.C. since the federal surge began in August and how many of those arrests involved criminal charges. They did not respond as of this publication.
