ICE in Minnesota: Agents pepper spray crowd in Cedar-RiversideCommotion broke out Tuesday afternoon as a crowd surrounded U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis.Video shared with 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS by Mercado Media shows masked law enforcement with vests identifying themselves as ICE and pepper-spraying people as their convoy attempted to leave the area of Cedar Avenue and Sixth Street South.RELATED: Twin Cities community taking action during immigration enforcement As protesters yelled at the agents, blew whistles and honked car horns, agents could be seen spraying the chemical irritant from their unmarked vehicles and getting out to aim the canister inches from a protester’s face. “I lost my voice. I was blind for about 30 minutes,” said Khalid Mohamed, a witness at the scene. “The pepper spray they used was so strong that it blinded me for 30 minutes, actually.”Multiple witnesses said prior to the chaos, agents were going up and down the street asking people if they had IDs and proof of citizenship. “We said it’s wrong that we live in 2025 and our own government’s coming to our neighborhood and asking us for our citizenship,” Mohamed said. “This is not 1930s Germany.”RELATED: ‘It is making people scared and terrified’: MPD Chief O’Hara talks ICE operations in Minneapolis“I feel really nervous, like anybody go up through the neighborhood like that,” says Marryan Amhamed, who watched ICE agents and bystanders yelling at each other. “One of the ICE employees stepping out of the car and spraying people in the eyes, and everybody on the ground.”“Three agents got out and went into the building and about five minutes later came out with nobody else,” says Andrew Hinrichs. “Some agents were getting out of their cars, and trying to clear people with pepper spray, and then instead started to spray pepper spray out of car windows, into the crowd.”5 EYEWITNESS NEWS reached out to ICE for information on any arrests stemming from the agency’s presence in the area but has yet to receive a response.However, city council member Jamal Osman said in a statement that a 20-year-old man was detained by ICE for a brief time before being released after showing them his passport.This is a developing story.
