Updated Sept. 4, 2025, 11:47 a.m. PTThe felony indictment supersedes a misdemeanor charge levied by federal prosecutors on Aug. 25 over the same incident, according to a federal official.CSUCI Professor Jonathan Caravello is expected to be arraigned in the coming weeks.A federal grand jury indicted Jonathan Caravello with one count of an alleged felony assault of federal officers on Sept. 3, charging that the CSU Channel Islands professor threw a tear gas canister back at federal agents during a July 10 immigration protest.The felony indictment supersedes a misdemeanor charge levied by federal prosecutors on Aug. 25 over the same incident, according to U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson Ciaran McEvoy.Caravello, 37, was arrested July 10 near Camarillo during a clash between protesters and farmworkers outside a massive immigration raid that swept up hundreds of farmworkers. The U.S. citizen was released on bail July 14 after four days in federal custody.Caravello pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor during an Aug. 25 hearing.Caravello's attorneys were not immediately available for comment.The grand jury indictment charges the philosophy professor with use of a deadly or dangerous weapon in an assault on a federal officer.Prosecutors say that U.S. Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas into a crowd of protesters during the July 10 confrontation. They allege that Caravello picked up a tear gas canister and threw it back at the agents.Caravello declined to discuss the specifics of the case in an interview after the Aug. 25 hearing, but referred to the not guilty plea. “Anything and everything I do at protests is to protect people," Caravello said. "I would never intentionally harm anyone."The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said agents arrested 361 purported undocumented immigrants on July 10 during twin operations at Glass House Farms cannabis greenhouses outside Camarillo and in Carpinteria, not counting 14 minors, all teenagers, found at the facility. Glass House said in an Aug. 4 statement that the company has not been able to verify the identities or numbers of individuals detained.One farmworker died after falling from a roof during the all-day raid, which federal officials said was one of the largest of the second Trump administration.Caravello was one of two U.S. citizens confirmed to have been arrested during a massive protest outside the Camarillo greenhouse complex.Caravello is expected to be arraigned in the coming weeks.This story may be updated.Isaiah Murtaugh covers Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Camarillo for the Ventura County Star.
