Mariannette Miller-Meeks act to stop deportation and bring him home (Iowa's News Now/John Richardson) KEOSAUQUA, Iowa — Immigrant advocacy group Escucha Mi Voz Iowa joined family and friends of Daniel Angel Meléndez outside Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ town hall Monday, calling on the congresswoman to intervene in his detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).Meléndez, an immigrant worker from Hills with ties to West Liberty, was detained on Nov. 4 despite being married to a U.S. citizen and having a 1-year-old U.S.-born son. His family fears he could be deported to El Salvador.“Daniel is a hardworking husband and father who has built a life here,” said his wife, María Lozano. “Our son needs his father. We’re asking Rep. Miller-Meeks to do everything in her power to bring him home.”Supporters held signs reading “Bring Daniel Home” and “Families Belong Together” outside the Roberts Memorial Center in Keosauqua, where Miller-Meeks’ town hall was held later in the day.“It breaks my heart to hear what he’s been going through since he’s been detained,” said family friend Laura Garcia. “No one deserves to be chained up for hours without food or water — especially since he is no criminal. What breaks my heart even more is hearing Daniel’s son call out for him.”Organizers with Escucha Mi Voz Iowa called Meléndez’s case a “test of leadership” for Miller-Meeks, urging her to stand up for Iowa families affected by immigration enforcement.As of Monday afternoon, Miller-Meeks’ did say she has spoken to Daniel's wife. Meeks went on to say Daniel's wife is filing paperwork but they need the government open to do anything.
